Best Furniture Stores in Singapore…Part One

I can’t believe its been 3 months since my last post! Ive got a post coming up to explain/defend myself (sorry!) but in the meantime here’s one Ive been eagerly waiting to share…

Moving to a new apartment gave us the (perhaps unenviable) task of hunting for new furniture. We took practically nothing with us, so had a mammoth task of furnishing a completely empty space.

I love furniture hunting but even I was exhausted and we haven’t come to the end…but since we’ve traipsed through so many stores (several times) and read countless copies of Expatliving, I figured I could help anyone currently looking and wondering where some of the best finds are.

We checked out stores in Orchard, River Valley, Outram, Bukit Timah, and went as far as Jurong. Some were more well known than others but there were some hidden gems that were really worth the trip.

So here are the places I recommend visiting and the pieces we saw, loved and in some cases bought..

Crate and Barrel

I have a complicated relationship with Crate and Barrel! I love their tableware and kitchen products but sometimes I do wonder who prices their stuff. It’s like the minute their goods cross over into Singapore, the company loses its mind and starts quadrupling prices…does anyone really spend $300 on a kitchen dustbin? 🙂 Conversely, some of their stuff is really good and worth the quality.

They have a good selection of sofas which are simple, modern and functional, but on the small side. In fact, most of the ‘high street’ or ‘mall’ furniture stores had sofas that were much too small, and in many cases they didn’t even sell three seaters. We had a very specific style in mind, going for a large l-shaped sofa, so on the one hand that narrowed down our choices, on the other it stopped us wasting time. Crate and Barrel didn’t have many sectional sofas in their Spring/Summer 2016 Collection but their designs are worth checking out.

We loved their mango wood dining table and bench dining set and went for it in the end. Mango wood does need to be treated to prevent termite infections so it’s best to double-check this has been done. I like that its a sustainable wood, so even though it wasn’t what we originally thought we’d get, we went for it and are very happy so far.

The best thing about Crate and Barrel is their merchandising, which does a lot of the work for you. I loved their gold table runner and woven place mats and picked those up as well.

Their style is very luxurious and polished -lots of upholstered items and four poster beds. We didnt get anything here in the  end but here are some things we liked.

OriginAsia, Tan Boon Liat

We LOVED this store – unique, handmade designs that can be customised and so many different options to choose from. The owner and designer Rebecca is always on hand to advise and give you all the information you need immediately.

We got our tv cabinet made here, ordering a new piece to a larger specification. The downside is that it took so long to arrive because theres such a long queue of items waiting to be made. This is such a popular store that you can come back the next day and half of the pieces you liked have a SOLD sign on them!

We ummed and aahed about their suar wood dining tables but decided against that style in the end.

Here’s the tv cabinet we went for and some other pieces:
