I can’t believe its the end of the year! This is my first Xmas in Spore and even though it’s probably going to be a quiet one I’m really looking forward to it.
It’s not actually that strange having Xmas in warm weather….but I do miss Christmasy things about London like Libertys and Somesert House’s Ice Rink even though I never shop there and I can’t skate! And of course family!
The Orchard road department stores all compete for the best decorations but they look pretty glitzy all year round so it’s hard to get tooo excited.
So these are the 5 things I’m looking forward to in my first Singapore Xmas:
Ok so M+S is cheating a bit but I nearly cried when I discovered a local branch in Wheelock Place. All the tinned biscuits, sweets, and desserts I know and love are there but unfortunately because everything’s shipped over there’s no produce like sausages etc.
I’ve already scoffed quite a few mince pies and I’ve introduced them to some Japanese friends who LOVED them. For my Singaporeans who may not have tried mince pies before they are little pies with fruit and spices like raisins, cinammon and nutmeg that you eat warm with icecream, custard or on their own. They smell warm and maternal and they taste of Father Christmas (guffaw! ) They can be eaten any time of day, no reason is needed.
2. Christmas barbecues
It’s rainy season right now so this one’s a long shot. I really haven’t been to many bbqs this year so I’ll try to make up for it. What I need to do is find some Aussies cos they have the best bbqs.
3. New Year’s Eve parties
Ah no shortage of choices here. Pretty much anywhere near Marina Bay should have great views of the fireworks and Marina Bay Sands will probably a hot spot. The Singapore Flyover is also organising a New Year’s Eve event.
But the biggest noise is being made about The Silosi Beach Party, a 12 hour party expected to have 20, 000 revellers!
4. Malaysia road trip
This is a must. I love road trips. I’ve only been to Malaysia once (Tioman) but I know K.L is full of Nigerians and the Johor region is going through a huge transformation so I’m eager to see it. Also I can stock up on hair products and seasoning. (Let’s keep it real)
Before I moved to Spore I had no idea where Kuala Lumpur was. The only Lumpur I was aware of was an Oompa Loompa.
5. Err…so there’s no 5! Singaporeans please let me know suggestions of things to do and places to visit this time of year.
Merry Xmas everyone! Or as I’ve just learned in Mandarin: Shengdan Kuaile!
