My Singapore Style

So due to popular demand (i.e one comment!) Ive put together some examples of outfits I wear in Spore. Shopping here has been very frustrating, which surprised me, because when I used to visit I always found great things. The first time I came to Spore, I came with nothing but hand luggage, bought a suitcase, filled it with new goodies and headed to Lagos feeling fly. Living here though is another matter…

One, the heat. The heat, the heat, the heat. Its clammy and humid and it means you have to wash your clothes as soon as you’ve worn them. Sometimes you have to take a shower up to 3 times a day its so ridiculous. So none of my London clothes worked.

Second, everywhere is air conditioned up to the max. So you go from boiling to freezing in seconds. Cinemas, shops and cafes can be a nightmare. So while i love cute shorts and dresses I usually wear them with leggings which kill the outfit but mean I have a comfortable median. I didnt take any pictures with leggings though, cos they look awful.

Third, everything here is made from polyester – cheap and nasty. It was cool as a tourist when I was looking for cheapie-cheap, but now Im living here, I actually want to feel like I have something of quality in my wardrobe. That’s tricky when stores like Topshop have completely different target customers to the UK, Dorothy Perkins, Accessorize and Mango have a 40% markup, H&M thinks a stringy vest dress is trendy and there’s no Oasis, Miss Selfridge, Bershka, Harvey Nicks, Kings road, Camden town or Brent Cross. Noooooooooo!

So it’s been hard. Certainly not the shopping mecca I thought it would be. It’s much better now that I shop the way Sporeans do, which is in their lunch break and on their way home and whenever there’s a sale! Basically whenever they see something they like they grab it.

Here’s a picture of a designer bag pop-up sale that completely distracted me from my grocery shopping last week:

Gucci, Fendi, Coach, Kate Spade...Sporeans buy designer bags like Brits buy tea.

I no longer do the kind of big quarterly shop I’d do in London (flopping on your sofa with heavy bags from Westfield and Covent Garden, switching the kettle on for a cup of tea -sigh) cos trying to do that just frustrated me no end here. I’m not even a big shopper, I just like to look decent and have options.

Ok, some pictures of stuff I’ve found here:

As you can see, accessories are pretty great here and you can get them really cheap. I’ve really enjoyed shopping for jewellery and bags. For designer stuff (which Im not particularly into) everyone says Malaysia is better. Yes, Singapore is very expensive because of import fees but more and more Im hearing about cheap $2 Japanese stores and secondhand bookstores so I guess like any new city you just have to keep your ear to ground and follow the locals.

Don’t let me get started on shoes though – Asia is a nightmare for size 8s!

So Im embracing my new journey (‘journey’ is the new online buzzword – hair growth journey, juice fast journey etc etc). I think the lesson here is to embrace how Spore is different to the UK, embrace the fact that a string vest and denim shorts is the norm here and just RELAX.

Till next time!

xoxo
